From Booklist

Reviewed with Gibbons' My Football Book.Ages 5-7.
Gibbons introduces the basics of basketball and football in two small-format paperback books.
Each book identifies the equipment, the court or field, the positions of the players, and a few rules of the game.
In the brightly colored artwork, young players, both boys and girls, illustrate this introductory information, then begin a game that adds a touch of narrative and allows for explanation without the tedium of listing one rule after another.
Bas ketball begins "Basketball is fun, whether you are playing yourself or rooting for your favorite team." A similar sentence leads off in Football , and that low-key message is at the heart of both presentations.
The books don't cover all the rules; indeed, for kids who are intently interested, they will raise as many questions as they answer.
Instead, they offer a starting point for young children trying to figure out what's going on in the sport or how to get in the game.

  •     I had gotten this book for my son who started playing basketball, so he had some understanding of how to play the game. Well it does talk about the very basics, I was kinda wishing it had a lil more. Even a 2nd book that goes into more depth as the child get older and more understanding of the game. When we first read the book, he was more interested in what team was going to win, than some of the rules. Overall its still a good basic book for young kids I'd say between 5-7yrs old that are just starting to play, or just interested in the game. It did help to repeat some of the lessons/rules he learned at basketball practice.

  •     great gift

  •     Basic rules of the game clearly stated for 4 - 7 year olds.

  •     Grand son loved this book.

  •     My kids love this book!

  •     Bought this for my son for his first basketball season. At four, I think it is a little big but he still enjoys reading it. I like the diagrams in this book.

  •     Gail Gibbons Baseball book is excellent and this one on Basketball tops it. The highest compliment I can give is with a photoof my oldest grandson having fallen asleep with his "My Basketball Book" in his hands on his chest . Simply amazing how he hasfound out so much and recognizes many of the aspects of the game at age two . I'll have to ask my daughter if we can forward the pictureof him asleep with the book on his chest. Ms. Gibbons would be thrilled I'm sure !

  •     My grad child really enjoyed reading this book.

  •     My grandson loved these books!

  •     Great for teaching your little ones about basketball. So much information and excellent illustrations.

  •     This is great for sportsweek and to teach and learn about the game. The illustrations are great.

  •     I have a 2 year old who is obsessed with basketball. He's constantly saying 'hoop, hoop' and 'basketball' so I figured it's never too early to teach him about the game! I came across the Gail Gibbons sports themed books and had to buy them. This book teaches children the basics of the game, all of the positions and how the game is scored. Some things are definitely over my 2 year old's head at this point but I think this will be a great book for him when he's around 4 years old.

  •     Good for beginners 6-8. Agree with other reviews. Grandson had no idea of rules of the game before he sign up for rec council team. Just liked to shoot baskets. Hopefully will get him started.

  •     I got this for my grandson to go with his junior size basketball, also a gift. His parents were giving him an adjustable basketball standard also. He was having a b-ball Christmas! He loved the book telling about how to play and what the centers and guards do, etc.

  •     Gail Gibbons's My Basketball Book offers a nice introduction to the rules of basketball with attractive illustrations. The rules are displayed during a game between two teams of kids, the Comets and the Blasters. Gibbons's text offers enough details to give younger gradeschoolers the basics of the game in a fun manner. It's a favorite for my basketball-obsessed son.

  •     MY BASKETBALL BOOKMy grandson rec'd this from us for his 5TH Birthday. He absolutely loves this book. •     My 4-year-old grandson is an avid sports fan. I bought this book for his birthday. I especially like the glossary and the explanation of important basketball terms. This book helps to build vocabulary (and spelling skills) while teaching basic concepts in a way that;s easy to understand..

  •     This really explains the game for boys and girls; it calmed the nerves of my grandson who was just starting out on an afterschool team of 6 year olds.
