From Booklist

PreS-K.
In a first-person voice, a little girl named SugarLoaf shares a peek into her family and favorite activities.
She is so named by her dentist mom and baker dad because she looked sweet as sugar and felt warm as bread when she was born.
The middle child between big brother Spoke and little sister SugarLump, she draws a lot, plays drums for her neighborhood (made of box-houses), and sails boats in puddles in the yard.
The text isn't particularly distinctive.
The real strength of this simple story, from the creator of The Dot (2003), lies in the capricious watercolors, which provide charm, whimsy, and winning characters.
The sketchily shaped figures appear human except for their catlike ears.
Children will easily connect with the last sentence, which puts SugarLoaf's world into perspective: "Some things are big and small at the same time.
Like me!" More books about the engaging SugarLoaf are promised.

  •     It is part of the reading series used in school and it had the necessary vocabulary words in an adorable story for first graders to hear.

  •     i bought this book because another sugarloaf book 'best kid in the world award' is my daughter's favorite book. this one is ok.

  •     my 2-year old son loves this book. he wants to read it every night, and every night we talk about things that are big and things that are small afterward.

  •     A young child's world has just the people he/she knows best in it. Their thoughts do not string things together to form connecting ideas like older children and adults do. They are consistently learning and watching their world grow.In this thoughtful picture book written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, we see Sugarloaf's view of her world and who and what is in it. We also learn the significance of each. This is her world as she sees it. Adults reading this may not get it but kids sure will.Published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers.#PB #worldview

  •     My 3 year-old daughter just loves Peter Reynolds and so do I! We've had this book for over a year now and we don't tire of it. For parent's who are looking for "empowering" book for girls I don't think this book should be overlooked. It isn't a "girl-power" book but those often sound didactic and well point out that girls need "empowering" since they don't have it. Here you have a spunky girl character whose dad makes her breakfast, whose mom is a dentist, and whose aunt is a construction worker and this is just normal life. Oh and did I mention that her favorite color is ... Orange? A delightful book!
