- I enjoyed this it was an interesting read
- This is a rather strange and adventurous story of a young boy from a small town upstate from New York City around the turn of the 20th century. Although raised by a widowed mother as her only son in fairly difficult economic conditions, he showed great promise from an early age. Against his mother's wishes, he ran away from home and went through some very difficult experiences before he got to NYC. There things turned around, and he because a success as a boy reporter for a city newspaper. Eventually his paper sent him to the Philippines in the middle of the Spanish-American war where he had more adventures and the stories he sent back to his paper gained him fame. I enjoyed the story, obviously written in an earlier day by a person with a different mind-set than those who write our modern boys' adventures. This was probably a great boys' book in its day. I wonder how today's youth would like it.
- cool book for my son
