Twas in the moon of wintertime when all the birds had fled...So begins Canadas most beautiful Christmas carol.
Its writer, Father Jean de Brebeuf (1593-1649) was a Jesuit missionary who lived and worked among the Huron Indians for twenty-two years.
Although Father de Brebeuf was killed during an Iroquois raid, the carol was kept alive in the Huron language for over one hundred years before it was translated into French, then finally into English in 1926.
Frances Tyrells glorious illustrations combine the details of daily Huron life with the wonder of the Christmas story to create a book to treasure.

  •     I recently became acquainted with The Huron Carol song and was delighted to find it represented in a picture book. The illustrations are lovely and depict the words beautifully. I am equally thrilled to find the book includes one verse in Huron and two in French.

  •     In a world where we must be careful how we approach the holidays in our clasroom, I found the Huron Carol to follow curriculum guidelines and enchant the reader as well.

  •     This has been a favorite Christmas book since my children, now grown, were small. I purchased it as a gift for a friend with young grandchildren. It is a lovely story and the friends loved it also.

  •     The books were purchased new, and they came in excellent condition. I gave one to my granddaughters for Christmas, and they loved it. The pictures are beautiful.

  •     This is a lovely Christmas story translated from Huron Indian lore. The artwork is beautiful and the music is included with words in English, French and Huron. If you are a Louise Penny fan you will especially find meaning in it.

  •     This is an illustrated version of how the Christian missionaries tried to teach the story of the Nativity to native American Indians (in what is now Eastern Canada, I think). This book is the illustration of a beautiful song, telling of the birth of Jesus, with musical notation in the back so you can also learn and sing the song. The words of the song are given in English, and also an older version of French and of the native Indian language in which the missionaries were working. It is a beautiful book and has a wonderful peaceful quality, like snow on a winter's morning. Very nice for the Christmas season.

  •     Unfortunately, it smelled like mildew.

  •     This Advent, the church where I am organist and choir director did a series on the stories behind certain special Christmas carols, featuring the carol throughout the service, and the story at sermon time. The Huron Carol was presented the first Sunday of Advent, and after an inspirational service, I decided I wanted a book with the story and music. The Huron Carol by Frances Tyrell was the only one I could find available. It is a beautifully written and illustrated book. My only concern was that it cost about 5 times as much as any of the other illustrated books about various Christmas carols, and I am wondering why.

  •     I bought The Huron Carol illustrated by two different artist. Both are masterpieces with a different theme. I could not say which paintings I like best.

  •     Very helpful for what I was trying to do with the book in a Christmas program. Beautiful and original artwork.

  •     I used this book during Advent with my third grade class in a Christian school in Winnipeg for a decade.
